Learn terrific drawing methods that will expand all your artistic skills and enable you to achieve a higher expressive level. Drawing the figure is more fun and less difficult if you’ve got the right tools. Working from a live model you will learn both new and traditional drawing techniques through simple, understandable and practical exercises. Bill will demonstrate ways of drawing that will dramatically improve your ability to see and draw the figure. In the course, you will come to see the work of great figure artists of the past with new eyes and understand how they achieve such marvelous results.

The knowledge you will gain here can be applied to all your artistic adventures and will give you the basis for being able to draw anything you want. This class is great for all levels.

Making portraits involves many skills:  how to understand and render the structure of the head and face, how to deal with proportions to create a likeness, how to make portraits more expressive, alive and interesting, how to make a caricature, how to create good flesh tones and use color, how to use the various media and combine them for the best effect, etc. 

We will cover many interesting techniques using soft pastels, oil pastels, conte, crayon, ink, watercolor and more.  Be prepared to expand your horizons and have some fun as well.  There will be a live model.

This hands-on class is all about line. After shaking off any pre-existing fear you will learn how to outline the human figure with economy, delicacy, and zest. Working from a model, you will sharpen your observation skills and enliven your drawings with that “extra edge”. But you will not just draw what you see. You will also draw what you feel. You will be inspired to look deep within, visualize your emotions, and commit your own unique personality to paper. This class is oriented to the individual and all levels are welcome.

Supply list:

• Several 24x18” drawing pads (the Strathmore Series 400 Drawing Pad is a good choice)
• Soft woodless graphite pencils (ideally the Pentalic Woodless Pencil 2B)
• China markers
• A pen and ink set (with round medium-size pen points)
• A basic set of watercolors or acrylics
• Brushes of different sizes

All Levels welcome. Individual attention is given in developing drawing skills through the use of lines, color, composition, light and form, and creative perspective. Try different tools and mediums when exploring table top still life, drawing on location and figurative drawing.

SUPPLY LIST: Pencils (HB to 4B), Charcoal sticks, Graphite Sticks, Conte Crayons (Soft & Hard), Drawing Pen & Ink, Pastels, Small Watercolor Set, Eraser, and Spray Fixative. Drawing paper (in pads or single sheets); Newsprint pads (14x17 or larger), charcoal paper, drawing paper, watercolor paper (cold press or hard press), and sketch book.

BRUSHES: Round soft brushes: sizes #4 & #6.

Also you will need: 12" ruler, masking tape or drawing pins to secure your paper, sharp knife, small mixing tray, paper towel or rags, and water containers.
