What is a Master Class?

…an opportunity for aspiring artists who enjoy working from life and want to learn ways to express their true selves in the unique and personal manner that is the imperative of all fine artists.

This is not a class for beginners or students whose interest is imitation, copying from photographs, or experimenting with the newest trends in technique or materials.

Rather, the focus is on the mind-set, principles, and methodologies that have been successfully used for centuries by those artists who have a humanistic concern for representation that results from direct observation of life. It is an expressive concern that requires personal mental and experiential interaction between artist and subject.

Working in collaboration with the instructor and other like-minded students in a non-competitive atmosphere, you will be encouraged to work at your own pace and focus on comprehension and personal growth rather than the finished product.  It is a focus on learning rather than display.

The instructor will design specific methods for you that will address your personal artistic concerns, enhance your perceptual skills, and enable you to communicate the ideas and feelings that motivate you.

Working from life will allow you to engage with time-tested principles of drawing and painting that are known to improve representational skills and strategies for handling the media of drawing and painting.

Too often, class time ends just as your understanding begins. To avoid that, we will meet for two three-hour sessions, interrupted only by a one-hour lunch break.

You may choose to draw or paint, or do both.  You may work with the traditional media of drawing, painting (in oils or acrylic) and pastel.

PLEASE NOTE:

Before registering for this class, students must submit a statement of intent and examples of work to the instructor at least one week prior to the beginning of class. Your written statement should express (1) your interest in representational art, (2) why you think this class will be of benefit to you, and (3) your artistic goals. Examples of previous work and statement of intent can be emailed to Bill Jerdon at: billjerdonart@yahoo.com.

Not all applicants may be accepted. If the instructor feels that this class will not be of benefit to the student, he/she will be encouraged to find an alternate course of study.
Prospective students with questions should feel free to contact Bill Jerdon by phone: 941-223-3829 or email: billjerdonart@yahoo.com.

Accepted students will be notified in time for enrollment and payment of fees. Should openings occur after the class is already filled, available spots will be filled on a first-come basis.
An additional model fee based on the number of students will be required. ($360/mo divided by the number of students )

In order to achieve the goals set forth by both student and instructor, students should plan on making a commitment to more than one four week session.

This class will explore the painter’s resources: color, value, edges, and paint quality. In addition, guidance in learning how to see what we are looking at, and how to set up a composition will be provided. Understanding will be stressed rather than following rigid rules. All of the above will result in one beautiful painting after another. All levels welcome.
