Sculpture Classes

The Sculpture program welcomes all students, whether rank beginners or experienced. Classes include instruction in working with tools for hand sculpting and the various techniques in the use of tools of the carving process. Direct carving is when we draw the desired forms directly onto the stone or wood we are working with. Direct carving is used rather than working from a model. With direct carving, forms evolve then beget into other forms. This method encourages creativity versus risking inhibition in attempting to duplicate a model.

Guidance through the entire process is furnished until the student has created a piece of art which is desired.

You can learn to use the “direct carving” method by drawing on the actual stone or wood and then carving away. Students will see their design, whether abstract, realism, or nonobjective emerge as they ship away at the material. Develop skills in the use of tools and create sculptures you’ll enjoy. All levels welcome.

The class is for those interested in creating simple intermediate and advanced projects from wood. Planning the project, creating a pattern, compiling a list of materials, and other essentials needed will be discussed. The class will also emphasize the safe use of both hand and motorized tools needed for the project. Techniques of proper measurement, use of motorized saws, drill press, gluing, clamping, sanding, and finishing will be reviewed.

The student will be expected to provide materials for the project. Basic hand tools, and motorized machines are available for the student. Students are welcome to bring their own tools if they so desire.
