After the fundamentals of structure are mastered artists need to consider the
manner or style of the painting. This class will focus on the personality of
portrait painting by thoroughly exploring various methods of paint application
and finish. The refined and elegant techniques of “window-shade” and glazing
will be featured and demonstrated. The excitement of bravura alla-prima painting
will also be looked at.
The class will include an exploration and discussion of artist’s techniques from
Raphael classical perfection to Sorolla’s direct approach. During the three days
students will have the opportunity to thoroughly explore the head and complete a
finished portrait.
Students will need at least three canvases toned with a mid-grey of ivory black
and white.

The Instructor for this week long workshop is John Wurderman, who was trained
as a painter in Russia at the famed Surikov Institute of Art in Moscow. This
intense learning experience will allow you to come in contact with the painting
legacy of the Russian School of Realism. Students will be doing short oil
sketches outdoors each day, with a goal of making a deep connection between your
tones, colors and textures and those in nature. Emphasis will be on how to paint
from the heart and have the actual process enrich your understanding of the
world around you.
Still Life / Portrait,
Instructor: David Leffel

February 25-29 (Course # 1828)
$ 775* members, $ 825* non-members
Please note: Registration for this course is subject to a 'no cancellation, no
refund' policy
Famed Art Students’ League instructor, and author of a new book “An Artist
Teaches”, David Leffel brings his revolutionary approach to the classical
tradition of painting to Longboat Key. In a departure from the conventional
emphasis on technique, David Leffel stresses the visual concept that must first
exist in the painter’s mind.
Throughout the workshop, David will cover the methods that allow the painters to
give expression to that essential idea. From discussions of composition,
brushwork, value, edges, and color, David will lead the painter through the
“sculpting” of three dimensional life upon a flat canvas.
